The Dementia Journey

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust successfully secured funding from the Department of Health funding for a pilot project ‘Designing the Dementia Journey – a holistic approach to the environment for people with dementia’.

We held a workshop before the improvement works took place in September 2013 and we’re please to say that all the work has now been completed within the Older Person Units (Alexander, Anne, Henry ward) and bed bay areas within George Perkins ward at St Thomas’ Hospital. These have included the creation of calm, recognisable spaces including “soft” flooring, artwork, appropriate lighting and colour coded bed bays. We have also created welcoming reception areas within each ward to clearly make this visible to patients, carers and visitors.

Invitation to a review workshop: what is this about and why is it so important?

We would like to invite you to a workshop that will take place on:-

Date:

Tuesday, 2 March 2015

Time:

1.30pm – 3.30pm

Venue:

River Room, 4th Floor, Gassiot House, St Thomas’ Hospital, Westminster Bridge Road, London, SE1 7EH  (see enclosed map)

Lunch and light refreshments will be provided on arrival

The purpose of the workshop is to:-

§Give a brief overview of the improvements now completed

§Assess specific wards to measure if the design meets the needs of people with dementia

§Learn more from your experiences to see if any further improvements need to be made

We would be grateful if you could confirm your attendance, no later than Friday 20 February 2015 by either emailing Dipannita Betal at dipannita.betal@gstt.nhs.uk or telephone 0207 188 5367.

Finally the Patient Led Assessments of the Care Environment (PLACE) this year will have a very detailed review of how dementia friendly our hospitals are, with particular emphasis on the ward environment. We are looking to recruit any carers of people with dementia to sign up and help – please could you promote the attached poster within your organisation (if applicable) or register your interest.

We would like to thank you for all your support and look forward to welcoming you to the workshop on 2 March 2015.
